What a year of sports anniversaries we have in 2019!
It’s the 150th season of college football. It all began on November 6, 1869 in New Jersey with Princeton vs. Rutgers.
Professional Football kicked off on October 3, 1920 making this the 100th season. The first game of what would be the National Football League was played in
Dayton, Ohio with the Dayton Triangles vs the Columbus Panhandles. Each player was paid $50.
This is the 50th season of NFL Monday Night Football that began on ABC on September 21, 1970 with the New York Jets playing the Browns in Cleveland. Joe Namath’s Jets
were beaten 31-21. Calling the game on ABC was Keith Jackson working with former Dallas Cowboys QB Don Meredith and controversial New Yorker, Howard Cosell.
And finally, and this should be a National Holiday, September 7th !
That was the day in 1979 at 6:00 PM local time that the ENTERTAINMENT SPORT PROGRAMMING NETWORK — E S P N — went on the air.
Now celebrating its 40th anniversary ESPN introduced Cable viewers to 24-hour sports coverage.
